Asian Americans are now facing hate on a somewhat daily basis. Turn on your tv or go on social media, I promise you will witness those disgusting videos of people attacking the Asian American community verbally and with violence. We live in times where hatred is a common occurrence, where ignorance overrides any form of morality. I would see a similar thing with the Black Lives Matter movement. People participating in forms of activism and slacktivism. Activism: Protests, creating companies, fighting for the rights of these groups in person and on the field. Slacktivism: Donating to petitions, changing your profile picture to fit the groups cause or strictly using social media to stand up for the cause. I have yet to see people change their profile pictures to an image embodying #StopAPPIHate like how I would see people who supported Black Lives Matter changing their profile pictures to black. But, I do see elsewhere on social media people sharing posts about Asian American hate and other petitions of the sort. Both forms of activism are important because it makes the movement more well known and potentially gets people to participate in supporting said cause. Humanity as a whole is in dangerous times and the more voices we get, the more power we have.
